Making Room for Something New

Last week I was listening to some ladies talking about a great sale at a department store.  The sale is legendary, and people walk away with mounds of clothing and shoes galore.  Now, I love a deal, and I also love new clothes, but at that moment, the only thing I could think was, “I don’t have room.” My mom looked at me saying we should go, and again, only out loud this time, I found myself saying, “I don’t have room.”

I wish I could explain to you all just how much I love getting a new outfit, but that’s really not the point of this post.  What I do want you to think about is what happens when you bring home a new haul of clothes, shoes, jewelry, or whatever it is that you love, and you don’t have room- mess, clutter, disorganization, and chaos ensue.

Like many people, over the last few days, I have been making plans for the new year.  I’ve been making goals and working out how to accomplish them.  I’ve been praying and asking God to do some new things in my life.  A few nights ago I really had a light bulb moment though.  It became clear to me that if I want God to bring and do some new things in my life, I have to make room!

But, how do we go about making room? That may look different for different people, but for me it begins with reflection and self-inventory. This involves taking time to look at what is important to me and where I spend my time. The big question is: How can I make more room for God in the major areas in my life?

  1. Spiritual
  2. Work
  3. Physical/Health
  4. Relationships
  5. Free Time

Just asking this question is a demonstration to God of how much you love Him and how important it is for Him to be a part of your life. His Word tells us in Psalms that when we “take delight in the LORD, He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). He’s already given us the motivation with a promise.

So, whether it means, turning away from some toxic relationships, waking up earlier to spend time in prayer and His Word, going to visit a church, watching one or two less TV shows a week,  or just beginning to talk to God throughout your day, I urge to start now. Ask God to show you where and how you can make more room for Him in your in life.  Just make sure you’re on the lookout for the answer.

~Also, be on the lookout for a forthcoming post on fasting and how it can help you make more room for God in your life too!

  1. Thank you for being so transparent in order to allow others to relate to the things of God. This is what is needed in my life at this time. As 2017 starts I have pledged to make God # 1 in my life and everything else follow. Even though our busy life style male us feel that there isn’t enough time in the day to seek Him, we must make it our # 1 priority to do so. Thank you again.

    1. Thank you so much for your support! I’m finding that the more I study God’s Word, the more I’m seeing that I our lives are our ministry. I have to share. It’s not always easy, but it’s what I am being called to do. It is my prayer that it will continue to bless you and others. When we put Him first, everything else will fall into place.
