Loving My Neighbors Near and Far

In my quest to take part in more cultural events in Dallas and meet new people, I had the pleasure of attending Millennial Nights at the Dallas Holocaust Museum Center for Education and Tolerance (DHM) this week.  Let me stop right here to have an honest moment.  After doing some research, I’m not exactly sure that I technically qualify as a millennial as different sources listed the birth years beginning at different times, but basically ranging from roughly 1976 to 1982. So, now that that is out in the open, I don’t have to feel quite so guilty.

Millennials are often described as a spoiled bunch, but DHM did a fantastic job of filling us with knowledge while spoiling us with crepes, pizza, entertainment, and beverages from multiple sponsors including but not limited to Tutta’s Pizza Music & Spirits, Whisk Crepes Café, and Regasus City Brewery.

This was an ingenious move, because once my tummy was full, I was more than ready for the docent-led tour. Our docent was actually from Germany which made the tour extra special to me.  Not only did she know facts, but she had stories to tell. It’s the stories that connect the facts and statistics to actual people.

What struck me the most though was the reminder of the responsibility that I carry toward those around me. God’s second greatest commandment is for us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.  As such, even today, especially today, we have a duty to speak out against the injustice we see around us.

When I looked around, I was a young, diverse group of Dallasites who were inquisitive, concerned, and desired to take action.  As a Christian woman, this is what I desire for myself- to want to know God more intimately, to be concerned about others, and to take action to show God’s love.

When we meet God face-to-face, we want to hear Him say, “well done good and faithful servant” and not be left wandering is there something more that I could have done.  What are you going to do today?
