But when that beat drops though!!!!!!
“My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Sometimes you just don’t understand things until you’ve been through some things. That’s the narrative in “Lessons Learned,” the first single off Kathlena’s forthcoming album.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect prior to listening to this song, but I was met with the transparency and rawness that I didn’t even know that I needed. Very quickly I realized that “Lessons Learned” is my story too, and I was transported back to some life experiences that yielded life altering consequences.
Much like Kathlena, I met God at a young age, but that didn’t stop me from doing my own thing when I felt like it. One of the most profound lines from the song says, “Unfortunately I found out the hard way that I am, that I am not you…”
And therein lies my question: When will we finally understand that only God can be God?
“I’m grown. I can make my own decisions.”
“It’s my life. I can do with it what I please.’
“I’m gonna do me.”
“YOLO”
These are just some of the things we say when we want to step into the driver’s seat and take control. Other times, we try to hand the control off to those around us, whether that be family, friends, the media, or society.
I want to remind us of three words that give a deeper understanding of God’s character.
Lord*Father*Friend
Just like in our own personalities, God has different aspects to His character, and they are all valid and true. Likewise, they also have the power to greatly affect our lives.
Lord
Webster’s dictionary defines the word lord as “one having power and authority over others.” When we make Jesus Lord over our lives, we are literally giving Him power and authority over us. In all honesty, He already holds all power and authority over EVERYTHING (Matthew 28:18). The personal acknowledgement of this is really for us. It represents our humility – the act of submitting to His authority.
Father
A true father has a vision for his family. He is a provider and a protector. In Jeremiah 29:11, God tells us that He knows the plans that He has for us. They are plans to prosper us and not to harm us, plans to give us a hope and a future.
Friend
When we take God at His word, it is then that He is able to call us “friend.” James 2:23 tells us that “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend.” John 15:13-15 reminds us of how there is no greater love than a man who would lay down his life for a friend. Ya’ll–this is what Jesus did for us!!!!!
Even when things don’t appear as if they’re going to work out, and even when we have screwed up monumentally, we can hold on to God’s character. That in itself is a “Lesson Learned.”
You can and should download “Lessons Learned” for your own music collection on all major music platforms.
